A few months ago, a MiNDS representative went out into the Fullerton community to speak to a group of women at the Richman Community Center in order to survey their needs. Among those needs, financial education was highly desired. Based on our conversation, MiNDS staff decided that we would find facilitators for a Financial Literacy Workshop at the center.
As we planned these workshops, we found that the dates of the program fell in April. In 2004, the U.S. recognized April as National Financial Literacy Month in an effort to highlight the importance of financial education and understanding. Each year organizations, banks, and other companies host workshops and offer information to encourage Americans to take charge of their finances and build healthy financial habits.
It was the perfect opportunity to get involved and do our part! So, as part of MiNDS Economic Empowerment Program and in light of Financial Literacy Month, we are hosting workshops in Fullerton, CA geared towards financial education. Our first session was focused around Shifting Your Money Mindset, and served as great primer to our next two workshops on topics such as credit, loans, home mortgages, investing, and more. Our goal is to help families understand and take charge of their financial situations, learn new ways to manage their money, and build sustainable futures.
We launched our workshop series on April 19th, 2017 at the Richman Community Center with over 20 attendees. Workshops continued the following two weeks in Spanish with representatives from Wells Fargo.
Our long-term strategy is to continue providing these workshops in order to enhance community members understanding and knowledge so that they can successfully thrive. In the future we will offer jobs training through our Economic Empowerment Program which will allow individuals to find employment and confidently manage their income. By doing so we are contributing to both community and economic development, ultimately improving families lives and reducing poverty.
