St. Joseph Health Values in Action – Justice Award 2016

December 1, 2016

St. Joseph advocates for systems and structures that are attuned to the needs of the vulnerable and disadvantaged, and that promote a sense of community among all persons.  In order to do this successfully, St. Joseph operates on four core values of dignity, service, excellence, and justice.

Last week our very own President and Co-Founder, Dr. Faisal Qazi, was the recipient of the 2016 St. Joseph Health System-Wide Values in Action Award for Justice.

“He just does the work, and I think that’s a great example for all of us” – Barry Ross, Vice President of Health Communities at St. Jude Medical Center

Upon acceptance of the award, Dr. Qazi explained his commitment to social justice and equity in our communities. “To me, the extension of my professional life into community work, and what justice means in that respect, is being able to help and assess families and individuals who need that help…Justice is about caring, it’s about healing, but it’s also about empowering.  To me this is an extension into the social sphere of their lives a well.”

It is his dedication and commitment that drove Dr. Qazi to co-found MiNDS – a Medical Network Devoted to Service—with Dr. Taif Kaissi.  The organization, established in 2010, began as a network of physicians devoted to serving the uninsured and underinsured in communities by providing free, immediate, and comprehensive medical and healthcare services.  Since then, MiNDS has expanded their scope of work.  Now, the non-profit acts as a catalyst for solving the social inequities of our society through economic empowerment and community service work.  Dr. Qazi believes that by going into communities and responding to their needs, it is an extension of what he does in the clinical field.

“Dr. Qazi is the perfect example of the value of Justice…he is truly an ambassador as a servant leader.  His involvement in MiNDS has been an amazing foray for him into the world of pulling people together to meet the needs of the community and to care for others those who need it most.” – Lee Penrose, President and CEO of St. Jude Medical Center

The MiNDS team is proud of Dr. Faisal Qazi for receiving this award and look forward to his continued success.
